Canterbury, England, Anglophile Friday

The photos immediately above and below are an illustration of why I often zoom in to take a photo. I like the brick and the charming bright blue door and fence. But because we're visiting Canterbury in the 21st century, we weren't surprised to see the following:

A bit aesthetically jarring, perhaps

Even Canterbury, England has to deal with road or sidewalk construction, or whatever reason they have those huge yellow barriers there.

Britain's version of the Dollar Store with its 'Amazing Value!'
It seems that everyone's trying to get rid of their overstock of 'Frozen' goods.

But then we get to this set of photos. This is more of what I was expecting to see in Canterbury. Isn't it beautiful! (With old buildings, scaffolding is an ever-present feature.)

Unfortunately, no, we didn't get to tour the museum
Too many places; too little time,
and the cathedral took priority

Hoping that Mom will buy her a treat

What's with the zigzags on the street?

'White zig-zag lines are used down both sides of the road and along the centre line of the road, both before and after the Zebra crossing, as shown above. These increase the warning to approaching drivers and also create a zone in which parking and overtaking (i.e. 'passing') are strictly forbidden.' from driveandstayalive.com

Medieval Gate House

Next week, if all goes well, we'll actually get to some of the photos of Canterbury Cathedral, our main reason for visiting Canterbury. Or maybe that's the week after.

Have a great weekend, everyone!

Absolutely gorgeous! I'm completely in sympathy with the young lady gazing longingly at the baked goodies; I'd probably drool on the window, lol.

Beautiful photos, Judy. A place I long to visit. Love the shock of a brightly coloured door and I'm always in search of a local bake shop when I travel. Hope you are having some lovely Spring weather today. It is warm and sunny in Ontario. Hugs, Deb

Hello Judy, what a n awesome tour. I love the gate house. And the bakery drew my attention too. Those dollar stores seem to be everywhere. The zig zag lines would drive my eyes crazy, I think! Thanks for sharing your trip! Happy Friday and have a great weekend!

It's always a tad disappointing when you visit these historic, beautiful places and construction is going on, or huge scaffolding to work on repairs (such as our capitol building). But cropping does wonders, as you have done! Great photos.

Judy, these buildings are so lovely, but unfortunately all need to spend some time in upkeep and repair. Looks like you were there at the right time for your photos, capturing the beauty. Love the blue door...I have a blue door in my new house!

as i scrolled through the photos i thought about the fact that when i see photos from anywhere in Europe i know they are not from USA... there is a special OLD look to England and France and all countries over there. narrow streets, older buildings, just a different look. these are beautiful. love that gatehouse and the blue doors. thanks for my travel by chair morning.

What a magnificent set of photos. And, thanks for the explanation of the crazy lane lines. I've looked at them in many pictures and never saw the reasoning. I think it's quite clever to warn drivers so far ahead of an approaching crosswalk.

You didn't tour the museum...but did you tour that tempting bake shop? I'm afraid that we would have. Such wonderful photos of charming streets and buildings!! (I can forget that construction is present while looking at your pics!)

The architecture is so charming! The bakery reminds me of the little porcelain Christmas village pieces my mom had under the Christmas tree each year.

Not fond of the zig-zag; otherwise, completely what I love to see...the beautiful architecture, Dickens-like streets and shops. Hope that the little one got her treat. I don't imagine that you did. =D

I like the Royal Museum and Library and the old Gate House. In the first photo the buildings are built very close to the water, not very high up. I look forward to future posts about the Cathedral.

Loved the shots - haven't been there for a decade or two! And thanks for the explanation of the zig-zags - now I KNOW I need to slow down and not accelerates, as I have been doing, befor a zebra crossing...
