Sense and Sensibility

via

I had no idea that Elinor and Marianne wore
CudlDuds under their dresses!
Now I'll probably get spam from the source.
If my blog is gone next week, you'll know why.
(and no, I did not do this)

Anyway, my daughter always accused me of having a low EQ (emotional quotient). After reading the book and watching the movie, I took it as a compliment. Marianne would drive me crazy!

1. Describe love using all five senses.

With my disability of a low EQ, I have a difficult time even interpreting this question. But if you're looking for a particular thing that says 'love' in all those modes, this might be it:

At least they cover Sight, Sound, and Touch

(Mr. C. said 'especially the Smell part.' )
He's so mean.

2. February is Canned Food Month. What's your favorite food that comes straight from a can?

Black Olives. Nothing else.

3. A principal in a UK school recently sent home a letter to parents requesting they (the parents!) dress appropriately when escorting their children to/from school (basically saying please don't wear your pajamas) You can read the letter here. It's gotten a lot of publicity, both positive and negative. Your thoughts? And do/did you ever make the school run (or hit Starbucks, Walmart, etc) in your pjs?

I've only occasionally (when I'm in a rush to get something mailed out) shown up at our village post office in my pjs, which I don't think anyone else would recognize as pjs: T shirt and black jersey pants.

4. Crew neck, V-neck, turtleneck, scoop neck...which is most prevalent in your wardrobe?

Scoop necks, almost exclusively. I like to make sure everyone gets to appreciate the wrinkles I've spent YEARS accumulating. I can't breathe in turtlenecks and don't like the seam at the bottom of a V neck. It irritates me.

5. I read here recently a list of four things to avoid so you wake up happier. They were late night snacks, hitting the snooze button, social media just before bed/upon waking, checking emails.

Are you guilty of any of these behaviors? Which on that list do you need to work harder at avoiding?

I would probably be better off if I left all electronic devices (phone and Kindle) downstairs when I go to bed and if I were to avoid eating popcorn in the evenings. These are hard habits to break!

I think Shrek is drowning.

6. Share something you remember about a house you lived in as a child? Of all the homes you lived in as a child, which did you love best?

I lived in only two different houses as a child. One of my clearest memories of the first house is when I was six or seven years old and sitting at the lunch table with my two older brothers, stalling trying to eat the disgusting tomato soup my mother had lovingly set before me. After an eternity of trying to avoid my soup, my older brother leaned toward me and whispered, 'Hurry up and eat it before it clots.'  That put me off tomato soup for years.

The house had a very steep stairway which gave me wonderful dreams on many occasions, all of which were nighttime. I would dream that I was standing at the top and took a leap - and floated all the way down to the bottom.

That was before I got a beautiful horse and spent my nighttime dreams galloping across the hayfields with the wind blowing through my hair (unlike the daytime reality of galloping across the hayfields and getting thrown off time after time.)

What? Where did you come from??

7.Your favorite movie based on a true story?

Most movies I love are based on true stories. The most recent is Bridge of Spies, which I loved enough to pre-order on Amazon. And the UPS man brought it today!  A good movie to watch during a snowstorm. I think I see popcorn in my future.

8.  Insert your own random thought here.

I'm glad the Iowa Caucuses are over. Why does that word always transport me to Russia! Anyway, it was great fun to see the media unable to control the outcome. For once.

And speaking of Russia, formerly known as the Soviet Union, (during Stalin's reign of terror), there is a true, first-hand account of the Soviet prison camps that I think you might find interesting. I did.

From the back cover of
Coming Out of the Ice, by Victor Herman:

"This astonishing true story is the tale of a young American man who was sent to the Soviet Union with his parents by the Ford Motor Company to set up an auto plant. He was eventually thrown into Soviet prisons and could not return to America until forty-five years later. During his life in and out of Russian prisons, he met and fell in love with a beautiful Russian gymnast who followed him into exile and lived with him and their child for a year in Siberia, in a caved chopped out under the ice. Theirs is the compelling story of a romance destined to thrive under even the most desperate conditions. It was 1938 when Victor Herman was inexplicably thrown into prison, after he had become a celebrity in the Soviet Union, having won acclaim as "the Lindbergh of Russia" for his flying and world-record-breaking parachute jumps. But what happened to him was a common nightmare during the Stalin years: those who survived imprisonment and torture were sent north to hard labor in the icy forests and mines, or into exile. Victor was one of the few who survived."

I was fascinated by the story of Bridge of Spies. Tom Hanks was so great in it. Love the video - puppies have so much energy. Have a great week.

Congrats Judy, you won my giveaway. Send me your mailing address...agrimm55@hotmail.com. Sense and Sensibility was not one of my favorite Austen works. I did like Alan Rickman in it though!! It was the first time I had seen him as a character other than Professor Snape. I had to laugh at your answer about scoop necks. I like the v necks myself. I see that Dame Judy Dench wears a lot of lower necklines as well so we are in good company!!

adorable bathing baby boy! 'clots'. yuck! v-neck for me.

I enjoyed your childhood home memories! I wonder what floating down the stairs meant at the time? We haven't seen Bridge of Spies yet, but will grab it from Netflix soon. I can't
'get into' any of the Austins' books or the movies. Boring. Maybe my EQ is low, too. I enjoyed your photos and your Hodgepodge!!

I love ALL the tub shots. a lot.... clots? yikes what a thing to say... I LOVE my kindle, that uses 3 of the five.. the kindle is my most treasured possession.. not counting hubby/jake. i did not love any of the houses we lived in but i loved living in Sloans Valley KY, the place not the house. lots of fond memories from there. that house had ice on my bedroom windows when I woke up, I fell up the stairs leaving a scar i still have, I had to carry slop jars from the house down to the outhouse, i had to carry drinking water from 2 houses away, we took our bath in a tin tub in the kitchen. yet it was my favorite place i lived.
i am trying to figure out if you have low EQ does that mean you cry easy or you don't cry. I cry in books and movies but not in real life..

Judy, I like those tub toys. I just ran across a bag of toys that Emma used to play with whenever she stayed here...oh my she's growing up...no tub toy playing.Hope your little fellow plays tub toys a long time. I hate to see our babies growing too quickly. Blessings, xoxo,Susie

Bridge of Spies was fascinating, and I didn't know the story, although hubs was familiar with it. Great casting too. I understand the popcorn addiction : )

Your EQ may be a little low, but your HQ (humor quotient) is above average! Loved the tomato soup story (perhaps because tomato soup is on the short list of Foods I Hate) and the Iowa caucus/Russia comment had me giggling. :D

On a non-humorous note, the book snippet makes me want to read it. We wanted to see Bridge of Spies when it was in the theater, but we missed it. Thanks for the reminder to find the dvd...

I thought I missed something in your answers about the bathtub until I got to the last one ;) So cute. I don't like tomato soup unless it is to top stuffed peppers or meatloaf. My pjs are usually the same- so comfy! Have a great rest of the week and enjoy your snow :)

Very cute bathtub pictures! A story within a story. You are so clever.

I'm with you, Judy...popcorn and a good movie are hard to beat! You've made me want to watch Bridge of Spies now. I'm a scoop neck kind of gal, too!

Hello Judy,
Bridge of Spies is on my to watch list.
The story you mentioned in your #8 sounds very interesting.

I am sharing with the boys the comment about tomato soup. LOL

Debbie said...

Oh my goodness I forgot about Bridge of Spies..I LOVE it! Your soup story would leave anyone horrified, yuck...lol. Oh and I must be low EQ too as I wasn't sure what she wanted for number 1 either, lol. Enjoy your day!

Oh you certainly have a great sense of humour in some of your answers that indeed shows. I like the house you grew up in memories. Nice photos. Hug B

We love tomato soup but only if it is Heinz...or if I actually make it myself. Which I sometimes do.
The pyjama stories have multiplied here. I can't say that I ever took my children to school in PJs, but have been known to take the dustbin out early in the morning wearing a voluminous dressing gown!

That li'l cutie in the tub looks like he was having fun! I always enjoy your humorous answers, Judy. When I read the memory of you flying down the steep stairway in your childhood home, it sparked a memory in me of mine...and my own stairway story. There was a slanted ceiling in my parent's bedroom that was under the stairway to our rooms upstairs. Well, the stairway was not yet boxed, only slats. One night I woke up having to pee REEAALLY bad and I sat at on the top step and wiggling back and forth. Well, needless to say, I couldn't hold it in so I let it flow....also thinking that Mom would never know. A day or so later, she saw the "leak" mark that soaked through to her bedroom ceiling. OOPS! It was a secret no more!! LOL :)

Judy, fun that you included the bathtub scenes in between your comments and answers. Have a great day.

I think that dogs do describe all the senses of love! Great answer on the olives. I just saw Bridge of Spies at the show two weeks ago. Great movie. I also love true story movies.

Too funny, I hope you're blog will be safe too! I really like your blog header photo too, your pup reminds me of my own dog, Misty. She loves all this snowy weather. When ever I hear Tom Hanks is going to be in a movie, I'm there, and his last one was great like always! Enjoy those rubber-ducky baths too!

The book sounds like something both Hubby and I would enjoy. Thanks so much for the recommendation. Always enjoy reading your posts.

I just finished watching the 1972 version of Sense and Sensibility (and Persausion, Emma, and Pride and Prejudice). The hair is pretty funny, but even then the BBC was a master at costuming. It is interesting to see how each version highlights different aspects. I did like Marianne better in this version. She was still overly dramatic, but not as much of a twit as usually portrayed. Maybe we need to watch the new version of Sense and Sensibility now!

Love your antique tub!

Interesting answers! The only things I eat from cans are cream of tomato soup - Heinz only - baked beans - Heinz only! - and the canned pumpkin puree! xx

T-Necks for me . . . even when they are not in style . . .
I have one on right now . . .
Fun video with the puppy . . . and parents??
I seldom eat anything from a can . . . maybe I use a can of chicken and/or mushroom soup for a casserole, (or "hot dish" like my Wisconsinite mother used to say!) Do they still call casseroles,"hot dishes" in Wisconsin??
Bet that is a "grand" enjoying some bubbles!

I agree on the pj answer. Some PJ's don't even look like they are PJ's. At school I can understand unless it's a spirit week.

Judy, I like the scoop necks also; I know what you mean about the turtlenecks - they bother me too. Your German Shepherds are delightful dogs and look like they enjoy their home very much. It's nice to get to know you better through the hodgepodge. I have a blog friend, Carla, who participates in these also.

I haven't seen Bridge of Spies yet, but I did see The Reverent with Leonardo. He was amazing in it, and I thought it was a great movie.

I loved hearing all your childhood memories - bad tomato soup and all, lol! And the book excerpt you shared sounds fascinating, I too love reading true stories. But the best part of all was the cute little fellow drowning Shrek... lol! That was great, and you made this a fun post to read for sure :)

I love the movie "The Bridge of Spies." The actor who portrayed the Russian spy did a masterful job of acting. Thank you for your kind comments.

Oh, shoot. I hope that seam on all my v-neck shirts doesn't start bothering me now. LOL I couldn't think of a single thing that comes in a can that I like. Not even black olives. Ew. :) I've been enjoying your snow and barn pictures...trying to catch up over here!

Some nice stories here.
Interestingly enough my 3 favourite foods out of a can are all soups. In no particular order ... Baxters Chicken Broth (http://www.baxters.com/product/chicken-broth), Heinz Tomato soup and Batchelors condensed soup ... Chicken and White wine which I use for a quick cheat stock recipe.
