Westby Remembered

I thought I'd post most of the remaining photos that I took when we were in Westby last week. Many more were put on Wednesday's Hodgepodge post (one post ago). The horses are in the valley west of Westby, just down the road a bit from the next photo (which I know you've seen before, but wanted to give you context):

The roads had been sanded by the time we got there, so they weren't too bad, but they had had an ice storm and I can't even imagine driving the truck on those treacherous roads in order to spread sand on them! Shudder!

An American Bald Eagle,
showing off for me

More rust, more weathered barn boards.

I think this is an old haybine.
No longer in use.

I thought this was the most unusual silo!

The ancestors' house
It would be so tempting to try to buy it if it ever came on the market.
But the carriage house has been painted...
...
...
lemon yellow!
I couldn't bear to include it in the photo.

And here are the original owners/builders of that house,
the cheerful looking couple sitting in the front row,
Mr. C's great grandparents.

Just before sunset

Rejoice, everyone! It's March 2
and we've made it through the worst of the winter!

Your Wisconsin terrain is so different than it is on this side of the state- unless you go a bit farther north into Door County. Can't imagine a carriage house painted LEMON YELLOW---ugh!!! Great pictures-the roads look the ones I grew up with in PA.

Hope you have a great weekend- xo Diana

Another great photo of the Bald Eagle, Judy! It's so thrilling to see one in person. Your photos are always interesting, so I'm not sure why you wouldn't show the lemon carriage house! The photos of the ancestors look like some we have. I guess it wasn't proper to smile back then! Have a nice weekend. ♥

Loved all those photos. Thanks for sharing. the photo of Mr. C's ancestors reminded me of one of my grandparents with all their adult children. Everyone so serious - holding still for the camera!
We are having high winds today. Everything is closed!

I have a pic of my ancestors and they are featuring the same cheerful expressions. Love the pic of the rusted barn. Have a great weekend, dear Judy!!

You have a great gift of sensing good shots. I like horses so that shot is special. I like all the history of your shots. It is a neat old home of great grandparents. My great grandfather build a house in the country in rural Iowa for ten kids to live. The word recently came my way that someone had bought it, lifted it and took it into a town. That will be a day of explore to see if I could spot it in town.

LOVE the horses and the bend in the road. so pretty. me either driving on that road in snow. great photo at the end and when i see old photos i always wonder if they were as miserable as they all look. i have never seen one from that era where they were smiling ... they had a hard life, even ones that were not really poor, just existing was a hard life back then. i would like to see the yellow carriage house, did you get a pic of it? sometimes i see houses here and wonder WHY

Beautiful photos!! Those horses are beautiful! I have always enjoyed our travels to Wisconsin. My mom was raised in Janesville and she always had fond memories of her time there. Thank you and have a grand weekend!

Do you ever wonder why they used to never smile in pictures? Beautiful sunset in that last picture.

We actually have sunshine today and it's beautiful, but a little cool. But I'll take it!

Have a great weekend.

Love those shots - the one of the horses, the scary-looking road - the ancestors. Someone said it above - they didn't often break into smiles in those days! Handsome house...but it looks quite new (by which I mean anytime from the 1970s onward)!

They may not have smiled so as not to post their bad teeth into posterity. Great photos, though a glimpse of the lemon carriage house might have been intriguing, but probably just worth a shudder.

I love the shadow of the cross (telephone pole) on the barn! That home is timeless and it would be sweet if it came on the market. The carriage house can be re-painted. Great photo of the gr-grands. Those old-time posed photos are sometimes so funny to us today. I have a few that make me wonder what they were thinking! A fun post! I always love your photos!

Can you imagine the beautiful square rooms in that ancestral home? (You do know that an offer can be made even if the home doesn’t come on the market, right? That’s how my son has his current home.) And carriage houses can be painted...red, I presume?

The vintage photo is really quite fine and not as somber as many I have seen. Both the great-grandparents look like pleasant people and the young woman on the left side of the photo behind Grandpa is quite lovely and smiling ever so slightly. Which of these folks is Mr.C’s grandparent?

What is it about rusty things and old barn wood . . .
Favorites for sure.
Enjoyed seeing the sights around Westby . . .
Barns, silo, family, house . . .
Loved the horses . . .
How serious the people are in old time photos . . .
Heaven forbid if any one would smile!

The ancestral home is so charming! What was someone thinking, painting the carriage house lemon yellow?! Eek!

What a wonderful day of exploring! I often think of the snowplow drivers out there on the treacherous roads, plowing to make it safe for the rest of us. Such intriguing pictures you shared and of the history too. Your husband's family looks very kind, almost smiling, which is more than some old black and white photos! Glad you got to get out and enjoy such a nice day :)
