P.S. My mother was cooking for a threshing crew on the farm when she went into labor oh so many years ago on August 6. She drove herself to the hospital and there delivered the joy of her life - her first girl.

The Birthday Boy and Cocoa Fudge Cake Recipe

Ready to blow out the candles

There was a birthday for a certain 6 year old grandson celebrated yesterday. As you can see, I couldn't find any candles so we used stick matches as a substitute. Glad he liked the cake. And it turned out to be a busy day, for in the evening we went to watch his uncles (our two youngest sons) play softball.

My 'vintage' cookbook that contained the recipe I used for the layer cake.

I might have decent handwriting if I'd never learned to type.
Don't you find it almost painful to have to write things longhand??

Grandpa always used lemon juice and milk when he didn't have buttermilk on hand. It seems that lime juice worked just as well. (No, I didn't realize that I didn't have lemon juice when I started this project.)

The frosting recipe with a sample of cocoa on the page

The proof is in the pudding, so to speak.

And here's my hubby (my favorite)

Do I ever call him that in real life??? NO.
These days, with the grandkids here, I'm mostly calling him 'Grandpa.' :-)
