To Drive the Cold Winter Away...

Christmas Cactus
Still going strong.
January 19

I suppose I should have moved the dog bed before taking the photo. Oh well, maybe next time. When everything's white and cold outside, it's such a blessing to have some things alive, bright and beautiful in the house (besides the dogs and cat).

My brother once asked me why I had so many plants. This is why. It is a sign of hope that springtime will eventually return with all its life and beauty. Next week we're expecting a string of days with high temps below zero degrees. That's right, high temps below zero - it's not a typo. I will be sitting beside the fire, reading your blogs, reading my new books, enjoying my Christmas cactus, and looking over the seed catalogs.

So what is your mid-January like?

Don't hate me but it is going to be in the 80s today. I shall wear shorts and scare the neighbors with my white legs while I mow the lawn.

Well it is not as cold here as there - BUT I can sure understand why you have so many plants - they are beautiful - love the cactus. Have a good weekend.

Elaine, I'm coming to visit you! Actually it's nice here this weekend - mid 60s. It's going to be in the 40s Monday and then warm back up again to 50s and 60s. I can live with that although Monday is MLK Day and a group I serve with is hosting a trash pickup around town. I anticipated chilly weather and already volunteered to pick up and help serve the food for the lunch which follows. I'll get to be indoors. :) Like you, I fill my house with plants *and* the seed catalogs have been arriving. I'm ready to plant something.

Thank goodness it isn't that cold here! We have the windows and doors open today, and it is wonderful! Your Christmas Cactus is beautiful, and I didn't even notice the dog bed - had to look again, after you mentioned it! LOL

What is your trick? My Christmas Cactus has only bloomed when I first got it and hasn't done anything since. I fear I don't know how to care for this lovely plant. Sending out an S.O.S. they are so lovely when they bloom. Big hugs, xoxo

You Christmas cactus is beautiful. Mine is finished blooming now.
We have had temps near 40 the last couple of days. But that is about to change tonight. By Monday morning our highs will be in the minus figures.
Have a cozy, comfy weekend.

So far this winter we've had a lovely mild time with temps of around 5 - 6 degrees C. This last week though it's changed and we're covered with snow....brrr!

Of course, we Brits don't cope well with snow so the whole country (Well, all of Wales) ground to a halt yesterday :)

My Christmas cactus bloomed this year and it sure was nice. I still have a Poinsettia blooming, too. It's in the 70s here today! I'm loving it! Sweet hugs!

Oh Judy, we are cold here tonight as that wind picked up!
The boys were invited to a friends to play, we picked them up early...I did not want to be on the roads at night.
Stay Warm!

I love your cactus!
I have 3 of them, and for some crazy reason they did not bloom for me!!

I like Christmas Cactus also for the same reason, a spot of color amongst the grey. We can't match your frigid temps but it is foggy and frosty here as you can see on my blog. Stay warm!

Your Christmas cactus is beautiful, as is the dog bed :-)
Although the UK is covered in a blanket of snow, we haven't got any here on the coast. It is very cold though and more snow is expected so we may not escape for much longer!

I see you have my favorite seed catalog from Baker's Creek. I order all my seeds from them. It is so much fun, to sit by the fireplace, and plan the spring garden....

Love your Christmas cactus! I only had one bloom on mine, since I transplanted it in the fall. Found you on A Favorite Thing and I would love to have you share this on The HomeAcre Hop on Thursday!

BEAUTIFUL Cactus. Mine bloomed early..prior to Christmas this year but I sure did enjoy them while they were in bloom! :)
Weather is windy and 34 degrees and going to be steadily dropping to quite frigid weather ...I think about 7 degrees by Tuesday.

Oh, the indoor greenery makes these northern winters tolerable! As I sit at work and look at the courtyard outside my window, it is grey and snowy; today's windchill is somewhere in the vicinity of 7 - a veritable heat wave, compared to what you've got! But if we didn't get all 4 seasons and this dreary grey cold, then we'd just get complacent. Whereas, who appreciates spring and greenery and crocuses and daffodils as much as those of us who've been buried under snow and coats for months???

You are so right about needing a little green growing in the middle of winter. My sister and I usually go buy a new plant mid-winter. Something with flowers preferabely, a cylamen, africian violet or primrose.
