Hodgepodging the Greatness of Grandparenting

1.Describe your 30's in one sentence. If you're not yet 30 tell us one thing you hope to accomplish once you hit that particular decade.

We lived in a green (or white, depending upon the time of year) valley in NW Wisconsin, not far from where we now live, homeschooled two sweet kids, had a third baby, and it was a pretty nice decade overall.

2. Is it harder for you to exercise or eat healthy?

Both are difficult if I've not adjusted my mind to them; both are relatively easy once I've made the decision to do so. And in the case of exercise, it's easy as long as the weather permits me to be outdoors. I hate artificial exercise.

This is one type of exercise I really miss.
I look a bit perturbed that Mr. C. is taking the photo.

3. June 7th is National VCR Day. Huh? Anyway this reminded me of something I saw on Facebook listing household items we no longer have and the VCR was on it. I couldn't put my hands on that list, but found another list here of 21 items we all had ten years ago, but which are now obsolete-

bookshelves (WHAT!!???), drip coffee makers, alarm clocks, file cabinets, desktop computers, printers, printed phone books, answering machines, fax machines, paper shredders, a Rolodex, CD racks, CD burners, china cabinets, home phones, entertainment consoles, DVD players, calculators, takeout menus, incandescent light bulbs, and cable TV

Your thoughts? How many on the list do you still have? Still use?

It's incredible to me also that bookshelves are on that list. I have a Kindle (Mr. C. will complain about the Amazon bill because of it), but we also have a few thousand books on shelves, use a drip coffee maker every single morning, have an alarm clock, file cabinets, desktop computer (Mr. C. - mine is a laptop), printer, printed phone...  OKAY. it would be easier to tell what we don't have: a Rolodex, CD racks, CD burners, entertainment console, takeout menu, incandescent light bulbs, and cable TV. Between Netflix (Dr. Blake, Father Brown) and Acorn (Vera, George Gently), we have more than enough 'TV' through Roku.

4. What's something you see disappearing in the next ten years?

My life. I turn 70 in August, and I have never had a birthday that's been difficult to approach - until this one. I have this sense of impending doom, like I'd better hurry up and make the changes I'm going to make and live life FAST. We're burnin' daylight! And I don't know why I feel this way, for I know lots of people in their 70s and 80s (and several family members who lived well into their 90s!!) who are/were in perfectly good health and enjoying life. (like my dad - see below)

Gave me an excuse to post this photo again,
two of my favorite people.

5. How did you celebrate your birthday this past year? Is that typical?

The family (kids and grands) was here in early August, which has been typical of the past five or so years, and I LOVE EVERY MINUTE OF IT.

6. Insert your own random thought here.  It's very difficult to make myself sit at the computer for a couple reasons: It's the absolute worst for my back and also because this is Wisconsin's summertime. It's so short, and I'd rather be out in all that GREEN.

Last Saturday I attended the baby shower for our FIRST GREAT GRANDCHILD! Here is a pic of the mama and her sister.  And look at those teeth! I'm sorry, but I always notice when someone has beautiful teeth. LOL

 Sweet granddaughters.
Mama gets the baby bump measured by her younger sister.

What a gorgeous dog! He's huge! Congratulations on becoming a great-grandmother! What a fun thing to experience!

Great Hodgepodge today, Judy!

I'm with you ... it took so long for spring to arrive, I want to be out in it when I can. We just had two days of much needed rain and things are greening up fast. Many indoor tasks are calling my name today, however.

Your granddaughter (the mama-to-be) looks so much like you! How exciting to think of having a great-grandchild. You don't look close to 70 at all, by the way.

Have a wonderful week!

You home schooled your children! That is so wonderful. I'm riding a recumbent bike because I can handle it with my lungs. I do hope to get outside soon and do more walking. We love our Roku. We will be getting rid of some premium channels on our cable and going to basic but not until we find the right place to watch our current favorite shows. You know that I never had a birthday that had me upset until I turned 60. That was almost seven years ago and I'm still not liking it. I better get ready for 70!! Our families both have longevity in them. My dad will be 95 this month. I'm not so sure my health will get me to that age. Yes get outside and off the computer for sure. Oh my, your going to have your first great grandchild. I'm just going to be a grandmother for the first time. I'll never see what your seeing. Enjoy!!!

Congratulations on a new baby to love! Funny, I notice teeth, too! Smiles, that is. I don't have access to all those tv things and I canceled netflix. I guess all those so-called obsolete things are still used by us old folks. I hope you will still be around in ten years. I wonder about that myself. I will be 70 next year.

A great grand baby...how fun is that! And you're right, they both have beautiful teeth. Also, I love the picture of you in your sidebar. I've seen it there before, but today it stood out for some reason and I really like it. And by the way, no way you look 70.

I turned 60 last year and that's really the first time that age bothered me much. But I'm trying not to let it get me down and I'm thankful since cancer for every day I wake up on this side of the dirt.

Hope you have a great day.

maybe you are feeling the 70 because of the great being added to grandmother. LOL... I am pushing 74 and have not felt the way you are talking about yet... bob is 81 and has no idea how old he is... I do feel the aging thing and don't care for it, but not the doom part. I just don't like the aches and pains. plus it is harder to live with the 81 year old pain as I age also and get crankier.
love all your pet pics, but then you know that. beautiful dog..so maybe you need a dog to walk to make you younger????

Judy, I have to say that 70 seems quite young to me. You are only as old as my 6th out of 7 siblings I have...all of my other sibs are in their 70s and my oldest sis is 80. My brother (who was the oldest sib) who I lost last summer, would have been 84 this September. Mom was almost 98 when died and Dad 91. Girl, you are not old and I know you take great care of yourself. I pray the Lord removes this feeling from you! Your grand daughters are beautiful!

First of all I have been having terrible trouble with blogger- so i ma happy to be able to post on your account.
Your two daughters are beautiful and have beautiful teeth!
A great grandma.
I am not quite 70 - but i do know what you are talking about.
I don't remember my 30's - lol.
And i use a lot of those obsolete things - no phone books or Rolodex - but I do have an address book - no cd rack - but i think i have the others.

Enjoyed your post!
Love, sandie

I'm close to your age and all of a sudden I'm thinking of where I want to travel...have to get there fast! haha! Time's running out! But I think we will both enjoy our 70s and do lots of fun things. We will....won't we? Hugs!

Michelle said...

I am still young (turning 50 this year), but my husband and I feel the need to start the traveling we want to do...already. Lots of things to squeeze into life while you can. We still use the drip coffee maker and have a tiny phone book for our small town. Congrats on your first great-grand!

Those girls are so pretty!! I started to say that I can't believe you're going to be a great-grandmother, but I reconsidered. I was a first time grandmother at age 42, so it is likely that I will have great-grands in my lifetime.

We still have lots of things on the "obsolete" list! (How can bookshelves ever be obsolete?)

I love how you celebrate your birthday! Genius idea!

Okay, so I’ll not school you on the faulty theology...your life will never disappear, but I hear what you’re saying. I feel similarly in that I have entered a season of loss where people younger than I are dropping off. Always a reason for reflection...

Day 4 of rain here. I do not like giving up “summer” to DAYS of rain. Now I must put that in perspective after seeing what’s gone on in the South.

Bridger, I presume, such a handsome dog. I’m glad your Beloved captured that moment. I imagine that you are, too.

Congratulations on the new baby coming...it is lovely to see the family push forward and grow. (My, yes, she has beautiful teeth and a radiant smile.)

Congratulations on your great-grandchild! How wonderful! I know I am just adoring my grandchildren!

Judy, Your grandgirls are very pretty. I hate to diet or exercise....but I do my best, which at my age isn't as easy as it was just 15 years ago. Blessings to you and yours, xoxo, Susie

How do you like Acorn? I've briefly looked at it and Brit Box; since I couldn't decide I did nothing!!! We have Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime, and Hallmark so we're all good without cable!

Jean | DelightfulRepast.com said...

Judy, I have rented Vera from Netflix on your recommendation and have been enjoying it very much. My husband won't watch it, though. He can't stand the character! Oh well. If you're into teeth, you might enjoy a British documentary series I've seen the first episode of on YouTube, The Truth About Your Teeth (or something like that).

Judy, your grands are beautiful! Oh my! A great grand on the way. I bet you are overjoyed. Nothing like those precious babies. We are enjoying our newest addition to our family so much. I can't help but laugh at the list of obsolete things. LOL! I still have many of those things. Even a Rolodex! LOL! And I did chuckle over your comment on the TEETH! My middle daughter works in the dental field and oh my! Needless to say her thing is TEETH! I told her once time her two daughters, my grandgirls, I am pretty sure has the prettiest, whitest teeth in town! LOL! Hugs and blessings, Cindy

Interesting post. I enjoyed it...just want you to know that I felt the same way about 70, but my grand kids and kids remind me how good it is to be nearly 72. Life it good! ENJOY! You certainly offer a great deal of enjoyment to us!

Congratulations on your great grandchild on the way! Wow, that's fabulous! Enjoyed your hodgepodge.

Bookshelves will never be obsolete at my house Judy!! Congrats on the new baby! You do not look old enough to be a great grandmother.

This last birthday of mine gave me a moment for pause. Now that Mother has passed I'm pausing even more but then I think of Grandmother and tell myself I could very well have at least another 33 years so... Ha! There is a sense of urgency as I get older, though. I'm so excited for your first great-grandchild! Those girls are just lovely and they do have beautiful teeth. :)

I think we all reach a point when we suddenly realise we probably have lived more years than we have left and that they seem to be rushing by and yes that is scary. But then age brings other benefits, like grandchildren and in your case a great grandchild! Congratulations.

Judy S. said...

A great-grandchild, how awesome! Since my oldest grandchild is 13 and I am about to be 7 years older than you, it's doubtful I will get to experience that joy. Seize the moment, Judy, and forget your age! Hugs!

these are always a fun read but in the photo of you and the dog it looks like a fashion model shoot! :)
