Pomegranates, before they are picked to make
Pomegranate Orange Scones
You may or may not have seen my recipe for pomegranate orange (chocolate) scones a while ago. They were delicious, by the way, even if it is a little odd to find a bit of pomegranate aril meal in your mouth after you've chewed up most of a bite.
Julie, from The Crafty Quilter blog, commented on that post and informed me that she had a couple pomegranate trees in her backyard, (NO KIDDING!!) but had never eaten the pomegranate arils. She was determined to make my recipe - and DID. She loved the scones - and later wrote a post about the scones, adding a photo of her pomegranate trees.
So, although you thought they were mini hot-air balloons, those things in the photo above are actually pomegranates in their natural habitat. Cool, huh!
Thank you to Julie for giving me permission to lift the photo from her blog and use it on this follow-up post.
In case you missed my recipe, click HERE to get it and to read about the Great Pomegranate Experience! You won't be sorry.
By the way, looking at the color of the pomegranate arils in Julie's photo,I'm wondering if the pomegranates at the supermarkets in Wisconsin were picked before they were completely ripe. So if what we get at our stores tastes good to us, imagine what it would be like to eat a tree-ripened pomegranate!
How many of you have eaten a tree-ripened pomegranate?
How many of you have never eaten a pomegranate?
How many of you don't know what a pomegranate is??? LOL For those who fall into that category, don't feel bad. I hadn't tasted a pomegranate until a few weeks ago!!!

We tasted our first pomegranate a couple of years ago. It was fun to eat. My DD sadly got a rash but she would almost be willing to try again it was so good!
I LOVE pomegranates and have been eating those tasty little wonders in my yogurt every day. I can get the pomegranate arils already packaged for me at Sam's Club. A lot easier than picking them out of the fruit. I've never seen a picture of them growing - they do look like little balloons. Awesome post!
I love pomegananates! I may have to try your recipe!
daddy's tree in GA the fruit was nasty to me. but then i was young and i like things now i did not like then. the photo is beautiful, they do look like balloons. if someone will make me a scone i will eat it... LOL
How fun to have a pomegranate tree. I want one :)
I love them and have eaten fresh. I picked one fresh from a tree once upon a time in Verona Italy. I'd never seen a pomegranate tree before then.
This year has been a bumper crop for our pomegranate tree. Thank you, Judy, for posting my picture! Just so you know, there are different varieties that have different color arils. We bought one at the farmers market and they were light pink but super sweet! The recipe that Judy provided for the scones was so good, I'll be making them again!
That is an awesome photo! I've never seen poms on the tree before. Beautiful!! I wish they'd grow here in CO...alas.
I love pomegranates, but will pay extra for the packages of seeds that have been removed already rather than having them bleed all over me, my kitchen counter, etc. Not my usual m.o., but ...! The tree is gorgeous - not sure I'd ever seen the fruits actually on a tree before ....
I have never seen a picture of pomogranates growing before, always imagined they grew the other way! Lol!
After I read your scone post, I wanted a pomogranate so bad! Then I remembered there was one in the fridge!!
We also found a new way of getting the seeds out that is really easy, thanks to youtube! After cutting the skin, you drum on the pomogrante with a spoon and the seeds all fall out. http://youtu.be/gvhYj-tVTN4
Awesome picture. I have never tasted one.
I used to eat them when I was younger - little. I didn't know that is the way they grew or in that direction - they look upside down. sandie
I've had them before. My SIL does something with them, though I can't remember what. LOL They are quite pretty hanging there from the tree like that though.
I really like the picture. I learn something new each day visiting here. Have a great weekend!
I always enjoyed eating pomegranates as a child, kept me quiet for a while, but never buy them now.
I have never seen them them on a tree before.
Looking so forward to receiving my new soaps! I plan to give them as gifts, guess I should have bought one more for me, well next time I guess..
Pomegranates rock! I have eaten them right out of the shell, what an ordeal but oh so good! Love them in yogurt, so good and good for you!
Nice to meet you!
Barb
I have never seen them on the tree before, thanks for sharing this with us. I love pomegranates.

That is a very cool photo. I've never seen a pomegranate on a tree. They were one of my favorite treats as a child. I loved picking each aril out one by one. Oh to have the time and patience to do that again! I missed your scones so off to look those up now. Hope you are having a wonderful weekend!
