The Old Woodcutter and His Sons

Mr. C. and two of our sons cut firewood on Saturday. It was a brilliant day for that job. No snow and in the 40s, which is the kind of weather Mr. C. likes for that job. I see that there's a lot of birch in the pile this time, and I guess there's another truckload (at least) waiting at the edge of the woods to be added to what you see in the photo.

And yes, Grandson did just wake from a nap
and he has a cold. Poor little guy.
Sitting here at the island with his woodcutter daddy

Just guess what he's looking for
The lovely camouflage duct tape is to keep the you-know-whats out from under the hutch.

You didn't think you'd get away from here without seeing more cat photos, did you?
Clockwise, from lower left:
Smokey, Tom Kitten*, Fraidy,
Smokey (again), Audrey licking her favorite kid (kit)

In case you missed the story of our new rescue cat,
you can read it HERE.

The part where the kittens come into the story is HERE.

*because Tom Kitten and the Roly Poly Pudding
is my favorite Beatrix Potter story

Sleeping in the potted yucca

Sixteen year old Tuppence wearing a grim look
'You're not seriously going to keep any of them, are you???'

This photo was taken just after letting Audrey out of her confinement in the kitchen so that the two adult cats could meet face to face with no gate between them. Audrey was sweet; Tuppence was haughty, and quickly ran up to the landing to emphasize her seniority.

Yes, this is the same stairway that a grandson and I ripped the carpet from last spring. I still haven't decided what to do with it. I don't like to rush into things.

And now,
about
Snapseed, a free photo-editing app for your phone:

View from the porch, early November, looking south toward the harvested soybean field
No filters or photo editing of any kind

Same photo, edited with the Snapseed app on my phone

There's not a Snapseed app for the computer, so I had to email the photo to myself, but it's fun to play around with Snapseed and see the differences it can make. There are so many possibilities. It's a free app, and uncomplicated, but not intuitive (at least not to me). Like I do with almost everything else, I Googled to find a tutorial. It was definitely worth the few minutes it took to see how to use it.

Have a wonderful Monday, everyone!

That's a good looking log stack, Judy, I wish our supplier had such good wood! How handy to have 3 generations of woodcutters in the family.
Happy Mosaic Monday.

'making wood' was a family tradition for us, too. always helped my father cut and stack piles, then haul to the basement and stack again. just this weekend, i brought a truck load from an old pile back in the woods and piled it in my shed...i haven't gotten that far from wisconsin, i guess. :)

the kittens are precious! precious yucca snoozer!

Frosty mornings and temps in the 40s are indeed good for wood splitting and stacking. I'm sure it's comforting to see the wood piles grow.

Love the editing you did on the photo.

Poor little grandboy! He looks tired and like he doesn't feel well. You always feel so bad for them when they are sick like that-even with a cold.
Love the camo tape solution. lol Those kittens are just pure joy when they are that age. I know you hate to think about adopting any of them out!
Lots of wood chopping going on there! Have a good week of it. xo Diana

I never get tired of kitten photos! I am living vicariously through your blog. :)

Ahhhh...I can smell the wood smoke now...and feel the cozy heat. That is one thing that I miss about life at The Farmhouse. It is also one thing I do NOT miss about life at The Farmhouse.

Hope the dear little grandboy is soon on the mend!

It is nice to get all that wood ready for the upcoming Wisconsin winter! I wish we had wood heat but I'm hoping the new insulation added to our newly sided house will help keep the cold out this winter. I love the pics of all the cats and kittens. The look on Tuppence's face is priceless when you know her character and personality. And the photo of the kitten asleep in the plant is adorable! Wishing you a beautiful week. xo Pam

Now that's quite a nice pile of wood and more to come...wow.
Poor little guy with his cold. Hope he's better already today.
Cats are such interesting creatures and they really can entertain.
Happy Mosaic Monday to you!

We had our first frost here a few days ago and although it is going to warm up some this week we are apparently heading for a real cold spell this weekend. That sweet boy looks like he isn't feeling well. Hope he is better soon. xo Laura

Hi Darlin'!

I could look at your sweet kitties all day long!! Just fills the heart doesn't it? Puurrrr.

Let's hear it for good hard workers!!! Looks like a lot of wood to me. They're saying that naughty "s"word (you know which precipitation I mean) is in our future forecast. We knew this amazing weather couldn't hold too much longer, didn't we? We know where we live. ;)

I've been smelling someone's wood stove in the neighborhood each night lately and loving it. Time to bring on the cozy!

Blessings. xoxo

I think you just uncovered a secret used by a friend when she posts photos. LOL Those kittens! That grandson! What a great family you have. That little man looks like his daddy. :) Hope Tuppence comes around. If she's like me, she may not. Ha!

Loved the effect the snapseed app had. What a great photo. Love your beautiful kittens. I would love more kittens but my two thirteen year olds would complain I think. B x

We used to heat our home with wood, so I understand the wood pile. It's nothing warmer. Grayden always said it warms you more than once! I hope your little grandson is feeling much better. And I love seeing your new little babies and hopefully Tuppence will accept the new ones. Have a nice afternoon. ♥

Oh how I miss having cute little kittens...but I'd have to give up my hubby since he's allergic to cats. Hmm, better keep him since he brings in the bacon. lol
I have Snapseed on my phone but haven't used it much, a professional photographer friend swears by it. Your photo is testimony to the wonderful results Judy.

Judy, you know me, I never get tired of Tuppence and the new kitties! I could look at cat pictures all day. It's a wonder I can get anything done!

How sweet! The kittens and the grandson are adorable.

You do take such amazing photos. I was asking my husband yesterday if he has been to Wisconsin. I told him all about your glorious photos. He has been there. :)

You'll have a warm and cozy winter with all that firewood. I hope your grandson feels better now; having a cold is no fun at any age.

oh my......that is so......much........wood! LOl

The kitties are absolutely adorable and I for one LOVE TO SEE THE PICTURES. They sure do bring alot of laughter and joy into a home, don't they?

Now I'll tell you the story of our rescues and what happened.

We had a rescue Princess and she left one day and we couldn't find her. She was gone for quite a long time. She showed up late one night and it was dark and cold. And lo and behold.....her tummy was BIG. She was half starved and so thirsty......she had come back to the place where she knew there was love and somebody would help her.

So I took her back in and took care of her. The time passed. Sometimes so slowly. I would hold her on my lap and just feel those little kittens stretching and moving and kicking....
I was looking forward to having them be born.

I made her a nice nesting box with clean warm towels and covers.

We watched and we watched and we waited........
and we waited some more.......
Finally early one cold March morning I watched 4 little kittens come into the world.

Besides their momma, I was the first thing they heard and smelled. Their Momma was just fine with me being there, and even touching them. She trusted me.
Weeks went by and the kittens opened their eyes and could see and grew and grew and sure got playful.
I loved watching them.

We knew we had to find homes for them!!
I had named the blue/gray one "Smokey". He was the ring leader for sure and led all the others into all kinds of trouble.

Our daughter named the little Siamesie looking one and kept her.
Those two ended up STAYING WITH US.......AND ALL THESE YEARS LATER..........THEY ARE STILL WITH US.

Smokey is almost 15 years old now.......and doing very well! He is pretty active and limber to be his age. He is so loving and affectionate. His sister is still with our now grown daughter and she is more of a loner kitty but doing well.

I fell in love with my Smokey from the beginning......and kept him. And he loves me back.
I'm so glad Princess trusted me to help her. We later found another home for her. And i will always be thankful she brought those little kittens into our life!!!

He is so adorable.... sleepy eyes and all! :-) Your kittens and cats are just adorable! I enjoy seeing their pictures on Instagram as well. We have 2 we sure love as well. Your scenery photos are ALWAYS gorgeous with or without filters! I miss having a wood stove... even buying our older home recently we thought we 'd have one back... but they converted both fireplaces to gas... I sure love the smells and sounds of a real crackling fire though...enjoy! Have a great week!

Blessings,
Jill
