Wisconsin Barns, Westby Fences, Vintage Caboose

The first two photos were taken in the Westby, Wisconsin area. I always love the look of the black Amish buggies. I was going to say that it takes one back to a simpler time but really, there's nothing simple about the Amish way of living. It's got to be tough doing the field work by hand, hot and sweaty, taking forever, and watching your neighbor farmers sitting in their air-conditioned tractor cabs, harvesting a field in about 20 minutes (Okay, I'm exaggerating here, but not a lot).  On the other hand, if we ever have a huge solar flare that takes out the grid, we know who will not be affected.

Now used just for fun.

Next weekend we're going to be hauling some slate blackboards to a few Amish families in the Westby area. I love that unglaciated part of the state. It is so gorgeous. I'm hoping to get many more photos. It's the perfect time of year to visit Westby.

One last fence:

At Pier Natural Bridge Park
Rockbridge, Wisconsin

Tomorrow's entire Cranberry Morning post is on Pier Natural Bridge Park. It is a gorgeous place to spend an afternoon. There are stairsteps so you can climb up to the top of that rock that is covered with trees and trails.

Amish School, Goats, Holsteins, and Good Fences

Looking particularly cute

I decided to take the longcut home from Chetek the other day because I wanted to see if there was a chance the goats were back at the Amish cemetery. Two years ago there were goats. Last year there were none. I had missed visiting the goats. (It gets lonely at times up here in the Northwoods.)

The other kids in the cemetery, keeping the grass short.
They were all very excited to see me, and were very vocal.
I love that cute little goat sound.

One of them finally realized he could go around the end
of that fence and come visit me.
(Check out that fella on the left.)

Soon they were all there, but I didn't get a second photo of the group.

Kicking and swishing to keep the nasty flies away

School's out for the summer.

On the way to town

By the way, the car in front of me actually passed this buggy as he was approaching the crest of the hill. There is no way the driver of the car could have seen if there was an oncoming vehicle. I guess he was in a real hurry.

Amish Wedding, Amish Buggies, Norwegian Trolls

 At the Wedding

Last Thursday we spent the day near Westby, WI. I love that area! It was a gorgeous day, and as we always do in that part of the state, we took a nice drive around the coulees and ridges. At one point, we came upon the site of an Amish wedding which had obviously just taken place. We met quite a few attendees already leaving the wedding by buggy or by foot to go home for chores.

Of course I didn't take photos of people, and just barely got these photos  (out my window) of the lineup of buggies. I noticed that all the people we met were wearing very formal attire, and the driver of each buggy was wearing white gloves. Evidently that's to keep the reins from getting his hands dirty. Looked pretty snazzy.

The following were taken on a couple different Amish farms, all beautifully kept places.

Harvesting Corn - September

This one was taken through Eric's moon roof. Sneaky rascal, isn't he. As he said, he just happened to be parked under the clothesline. Anyway, he has many friends among the Amish in the Westby area. He may bring one of his Amish friends up here one night in October because I ordered some handmade items from him, as Christmas gifts. I'll be sure to show you AFTER Christmas. :-)

So Eric phoned the other night. I was in Sam's Club. I answered with,
'You've got 2 minutes. I'm in the store.' (Don't worry. He'd be offended if I were nice to him. :-)
'I think Daniel wants to come up to your house to deliver the ____, so it sounds like you may be having Amish for dinner.'
'Mmmm, are they tasty?'
'Yeah, as long as they're slow cooked.'

(A typical conversation.)
