Wisconsin Barns and Good Fences

Late afternoon, Barn north of Melvina, WI
 White Barn west of Viroqua

Could you tell that this is an Amish farm? :-)
Near Westby WI

I don't know if I've posted this photo before. I was so happy when I saw that our Amish neighbor had acquired a flock of sheep. Mr. C. tells me that the piece of equipment resting on that wagon is a pump of some sort.

Wisconsin Barns and Good Fences

 Red Barns in April
Melvina, WI

Fence in Leon, Wisconsin...

...which is right next to this treehouse!...

...which is not too far down the road from this barn.

I'm scheduling posts to publish this week, for we're in SW Wisconsin for a few days. I'm hoping to get around to visit, but if I seem absent, you'll know why.

Wisconsin Barns and Good Fences

Barn SW of Chetek, WI
Springtime, 2016

It's beautiful countryside up here, folks, and you can't imagine how happy I am that the snow is gone. We drove out of snow that was in Westby and north to NO SNOW. I hear we're supposed to suffer a relapse on Thursday, but that should just be temporary. Spring is truly on its way to northwestern Wisconsin. The red wing blackbirds and robins have returned, and I'll be looking for springing beauties and May flowers in the woods when it gets a bit warmer. Daffodils, lily of the valley, and lilacs coming soon.

Dark and Stormy Night, Wisconsin Barns and Good Fences

Sunrise on OO
Although it started out like this at 7 AM
(from my cell phone, as I was taking Abby home)...

...within about ten minutes it had completely clouded over and we had a gray day, all day (below).

It rained off and on during the day, settling the snow a bit, and the winds picked up and became quite wild.  Mr. C. was out of town, and Alert Dog, although she's a wonderful, loving and snuggly companion, wasn't designed for security. She always alerts me to anyone coming onto our property, but she is, after all, your typical party animal, inviting anyone to come in and be her new friend.

Semper Vigilans
(not exactly)

After dinner, I had turned on the TV to watch an old George Gently and fell asleep on the sofa. Don't ask me how I can fall asleep during a George Gently, because it's my favorite. Maybe it's because I'd already seen that particular episode at least three times.

Uh-oh. Vigilance is turning to Drowsiness.
She's fading fast.

Fortunately, I had been awake about a minute before the following occurred:

All of a sudden, there was an ***EXPLOSION*** that shook the house. No, really, it did. My brave Alert Dog came quickly trotting into the living room to leap up onto the sofa beside me. I lay perfectly still for a minute, imagining at first that someone had kicked in the basement door. Then I thought maybe a shotgun (or a cannon?) had been fired. Or maybe something Mr. C. had stored in the basement (like paint?) exploded. At last my more reasonable self kicked in and I thought, 'Ah, I wonder if a branch on that old maple tree broke off in the wind and fell onto the deck.'

Sure enough.  I looked outdoors at the tree in the dark, and there lay the branch, in several pieces on the deck. Even with a flashlight, I could not see whether or not it had hit the roof (that would not have been a good thing), but at least I had found the source of the huge explosion.

 With all the woodpecker activity,
we should have known that
it was only a matter of time.

After examining the fallen branch, Alert Dog and I returned to the relative safety of our living room and waited for Mr. C. to arrive home.  There's a lot more of that tree to fall down during the spring. We had it trimmed a few years ago, but the branch we were most worried about falling on our house was unable to be reached by the trimming guy. So I don't know what happens now. We had a new roof put on the house last summer, and I hope the tree doesn't fall on it.

I'm so thankful that the branch (which wasn't a giant redwood or anything, but still was about 11 inches in diameter) didn't fall into the leaded glass window, which it surely could have done.

I would greatly miss that old window.

Why do dark and stormy nights always seem scarier when Mr. C. is away.

Do you like staying alone at night way out in the middle of nowhere?

When it's dark and stormy?

And windy?

And stormy?

And dark?

And the power goes out?

Hodgepodging The Jalapenos

Preparing Jalapenos for the Freezer
(This time I remembered to wear gloves!
One tends to forget that only once.)

1. Something on your October calendar that makes you smile.

Besides the big picture of a German Shepherd?  two of our children's wedding anniversaries - one on October 1 and one October 17.  One has been married seventeen years and the other has been married four years. One is living in Wisconsin; the other escaped to Texas.

2. Food for the soul or music for the soul...which camp are you in? Tell us why.

Music for the soul. But isn't music food for the soul? I could last a while without my chicken salad sandwich, potato chips, and tomato, but beautiful music feeds my soul. One of my favorites:

3. What are two or three things you've learned recently as the result of an online search?

Most recently, finding the 25 most popular hymns of the 19th century; finding prayers of the early church; searching my own website for one of my favorite pork chop recipes. Then again, I'm always looking up stuff, from news articles to recipes to book reviews - and more.

4. Share your favorite game day recipe. You can describe it, post the how-to, or add a link to the actual recipe.

Game? Are you talking Hangman or Scrabble?

But I do have a recipe to share: Here's a link to my favorite pork chop recipe:

Blackened Pork Chops and Butternut Squash

'Blackened' sounds intentional and so much better than 'burned,' doesn't it. Oh well, they were delicious, and I used both black beans and cannellini beans, drained. The butternut squash was baked and set in the skillet for the photo. This made a great fall dinner.
5. What are your five essential steps for creating the perfect morning routine?

I should preface this with the most important step for creating the perfect morning routine, and that would be not waking (and staying awake) at 4:30 AM. That throws the whole day off key. Now, with that aside:

Prayer
Bible and other reading
Coffee and protein bar
Morning news
Dogs

Laundry
Making soap

That takes me to 8:30, and from there it's up for grabs.

(Mr. C. is gone to work before I even awaken.) I hope my daughter will let me know if that is a bad sentence. :-)

 Jazzie, making herself comfortable

For any who were concerned last week when I mentioned that Jazzie's favorite bed had been moved to make room for the new door to the screen room, please note - Jazzie managed to find it on the other side of the library. She doesn't look too anxious, does she.

6. What small thing have you taken note of today?

The new battery for my computer. I was without computer for about a week, waiting for the new battery to arrive. Why is it the computer can't work on electricity, simply plugged into an active outlet, without the battery? That seems strange to me.

Makes me want to go barefoot

7. Sum up your September in seven words or less.

September - even better than May this year

8.  Insert your own random thought here.

This is a link to a Wisconsin Public Television short video describing the way many of us here in the Northwoods feel about winter - um, that does not include Carla. I think Carla is part Polar Bear.  Anyway, it's a cute video and aptly describes our daughter and her husband who abandoned Wisconsin for a better life (Ha!) in Texas and my sister who escapes each winter to spend half of her life in Florida. The rest of us stay here and try to muster up a good attitude.

We're now into the nights of predicted frost, which means dragging out sheets and blankets to cover flowers and house plants that are currently living outdoors. Squash and pumpkins can take a light frost, so they're toughing this one out without a blanket.

Wisconsin Barns and Good Fences

Barn on D
♪♫
It sounds like the title of a musical composition, doesn't it.
Anyway, it refers to Highway D in Barron County, WI

This barn has many components that appeal to me: Stone silo base, rusty roof, weathered wood, glass block windows, green roof, and it's within five miles. The not-looking-too-stable part doesn't appeal to me, but then again, it's what happens to barns in this climate that go unheated during the long winter. Once all those warm cow bodies are no longer keeping up the interior barn temperature, the ravages of our harsh winters take their toll on the foundations, and the barns begin their descent to destruction. Very few owners can afford to pay taxes on those structures, let alone keep them heated just for olde time's sake.

Wisconsin Barns and Good Fences

 Neighbors' Horse Barn?
That's not the kind of horse power I was expecting to see.

Ah yes, here are the horses, standing in the shade.

The barn above kinda reminds me of our garage which currently has no room for my car! And no, FYI, we are not hoarders. But don't ask our daughter to verify that.

I drive past this cute little old hobby farm on my way to Barron. Usually there are horses or a few cattle out in that yard, but not today, unfortunately.

 Where's Waldo?

Can you find:
Barn scraper
Gate
Burdock plant
Lawn tractor
Dinner bell
Wagon Wheel
Electric meter
Four wheeler
Invasive box elder trees
Windmill

And FENCE

P.S. I think Waldo is in the house having his morning coffee.
