Vintage Wisconsin Postcards

This has been a familiar scene in Wisconsin for decades. Although this Long Lake is near Campbellsport on the eastern side of the state, we have a Long Lake on our side of the state too. It's there that my parents took my brothers, my sister, and me for a few days' vacation back in the 1950s.

What do I remember about that vacation? The scene you see in the photo postcard above. It looked just like that. There was a dirt path from the cabins to the canteen - where my mom bought windmill cookies (and probably other things that didn't make nearly as big an impression on me). I've loved windmill cookies ever since, although now they're thinner and smaller. Or maybe it's just because I'm fatter and bigger.

Vacations like that, whether camping in a tent or staying in a cabin beside the lake, make wonderful memories for a kid. It was a sweet time. Plus, I have no memory of my brothers trying to push me off the dock, so that's good too.

The photo above also looks a lot like Camp Chetek a.k.a. Chetek Baptist Bible Camp, where I spent many summers as a kid. Those were great times - swimming, making lanyard bracelets, buying cheap candy from the canteen, memorizing tons of Scripture, painting plaques for the wall, buying a glow-in-the-dark cross for my bedroom, sitting around campfires in the evenings, listening to missionaries tell of their work in foreign lands, watching camp counselor skits, getting homesick my first year there after everyone else in our cabin got homesick, etc.

These postcards are from Shawano, Wisconsin, pronounced SHAW-no. I know it looks like it should have an extra syllable...  I don't know when the photos were taken (turn of the century?) but they are definitely a part of Wisconsin history.

Misty

Misty, before becoming blind and deaf

I'm happy to report that the snowy photo above was taken nine months ago, not this morning. But this white stuff is coming all too soon and I'm not looking forward to it.

My biggest concern here is that in the past few months Misty has become blind and deaf. So what she has left to help her navigate is...her nose. With each fresh snow, will the scent that she uses to find her way be gone? I think so.  

Last night we had a little rain, and this morning when I let the dogs out, I noticed after a few minutes that Misty seemed totally lost, rather than keeping her nose to the ground and finding her way back to the house. I went out and put the lead on her and brought her back to the house. When it's not been raining (or snowing), she spends 30-45 minutes just wandering around the backyard or field, following her nose, off on her own daily adventure.

I think that with each new snow Misty will be taken out on lead. I don't want to lose that sweet dog, and it's sad to see her confused and bump into things.

But quality of life? I think Misty would say it's good. She still spends most of her day at my feet, wherever I am, and feels safe. After all, she is still top dog around here. And somebody's gotta keep 120 pound Bridger in his place.

Frosted Apple Spice Handcrafted Soap

Frosted Apple Spice

Here in NW Wisconsin, it went from hot summer to chilly autumn practically overnight! Sadly, all of my butternut and sunshine squash looked a tad translucent when I checked on them Sunday morning. Although had I covered many other plants to protect them from frost, I totally forgot to cover the squash - which live in their own garden behind the garage. I wonder if the people at the huge, nearby pumpkin patch had to cover all those pumpkins on Saturday night!

Because of a hard frost last spring after the McIntosh tree was in full blossom, it bore no fruit this year, although I do still have dried apple peel and several pints of applesauce from last year's crop.

There's something so inviting about the fragrance of spiced apple! Do you remember going to the apple orchard when you were a kid? We did, and they gave us spiced apple cider as well as samples of several apple varieties. I remember the blue skies, the warm sun, the cool air, and the bees that hovered near the apple bins.
