Does Woolly Bear Caterpillar Predict Milder or Harsher Winter?

Woolly Bear Caterpillar
On his way to the mailbox

Are we going to have another harsh winter?

From Insects.About.com

"According to folk wisdom, when the brown bands on fall woolly bears are narrow, it means a harsh winter is coming. The wider the brown band, the milder the winter will be. Some towns hold annual woolly worm festivals in the fall, complete with caterpillar races and an official declaration of the woolly worm's prediction for that winter.

"Are the woolly worm's bands really an accurate way to predict the winter weather? Dr. C.H. Curran, former curator of insects at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City, tested the woolly worms' accuracy in the 1950's. His surveys found an 80% accuracy rate for the woolly worms' weather predictions.

"Other researchers have not been able to replicate the success rate of Curran's caterpillars, though. Today, entomologists agree that woolly worms are not accurate predictors of winter weather."

 From February of 2014
It was cold, trust me.

***

I'm putting my money on the Woolly Bear Caterpillar rather than the weatherman, although I don't have last year's caterpillar to compare the two. We need a mild winter after last year's horrid winter and the year before where we had 18 inches of snow the beginning of May.

 May 5, 2013

Am I the only one who calls them Wooly Bears? I see that this article calls them a Woolly Worm. I know they're a worm, but they're way cuter than your typical nightcrawler.

***

P.S.  After I had written the above, Mr. Cranberry saw TWO woolly bear caterpillars crossing the road. They were all black. That is not a good sign for those of us in the Northwoods.

P.P.S. So what do you think? Any predictions? And does it matter to you? Do you love winter?

French Lilac & Lavender Homemade Vegan Luxury Soap

 'French Lilac & Lavender'
Natural Vegan Soap

French Lilac & Lavender Homemade Vegan Soap is everything you would want it to be: beautiful, moisturizing, fragrant, a generous 4.5+ oz, long-lasting, and it has a great lather!

The name comes from the lilacs that grew in my great aunt's garden when I was a child. French Lilac & Lavender is made with all natural base oils, a natural colorant to give it a rich purple lilac color, a quality fragrance oil, and essential oils. This handcrafted soap has a gentle and abundant lather. Not drying and harsh like chemical-laden soaps. French Lilac & Lavender is made with only the best ingredients to bring you a lovely soap for shower or bath. You will love its fragrant presence that comes alive when the water hits it!

Another Vegan soap. No animal products are used in our homemade soaps, ever!

Not only is this a luxury bar of soap, but that interesting texture to the top and the French Lilac color make this a beautiful bar of soap as well! Be sure to keep one in the guest bath - but only if you want those guests to return!

Allow your French Lilac & Lavender Homemade Vegan Soap to drain and dry on a slotted soap dish between uses and it will last a very long time.

Each hand cut soap comes with its own distinctive label and is wrapped in a cello bag with a gold seal, ready to give as a gift.

Anglophile Friday - Highland Cattle

A face only a mother could love...

In my mind's eye, I see these Highland Cattle on a farm owned by Fred Flintstone - with pileated woodpeckers hammering away in the nearby trees.

Highland Cattle. Yes, I'm straying a bit from my typically England post, but there is something so fascinating about Highland Cattle!  This past summer when my cousin was visiting, we were on our way to Colfax (in a big hurry, I might add, to get her to a dental appointment on time) and on Hwy M, north of Colfax, we drove past a herd of Highland Cattle. I SO wanted to get a photo of them. Since I didn't have time to stop and take the photo at that time, and even if I had tried on the way back, the sun would have been on the wrong side...I went at a later time to get the photos.

Aren't they gorgeous creatures! (in a strange sort of way).

Here's lookin' at you, kid!

From Wikipedia.org:

'Highlands are known as a hardy breed due to the rugged nature of their native Scottish Highlands, with high rainfall and strong winds. Highland cattle have been successfully established in many temperate countries and indeed in countries where winters are substantially colder than Scotland's such as central Europe and Canada.

Their hair provides protection during the cold winters and their skill in browsing for food enables them to survive in steep mountain areas. They both graze and browse and eat plants which many other cattle avoid. The meat tends to be leaner than most beef because Highlands get most of their insulation from their thick shaggy hair rather than subcutaneous fat. The coat makes them a good breed for cold northern climates and they are able to thrive in outdoor conditions that would defeat most other breeds of domestic beef cattle. As such, Highland cattle are able to produce beef at a reasonable gross margin from inhospitable land that would otherwise normally be incapable of rendering a profit agriculturally.

Whilst the UK domestic and worldwide popularity of Highland cattle has made trade in pedigree beasts occasionally the most lucrative - mainly on account of their handsome appearance - they are at their best agriculturally when used to produce beef in a cold climate from poor pasture and forage.'  Read More...

In the Backyard - Truck Tire

I can't begin to tell you how much more stuff I notice, since I got my new camera. It's nothing fancy, and is really what they categorize as a 'point and shoot,' but it does give me the ability to walk around, taking pictures of things I like. Believe it or not, I liked this. It's the wheel and tire on an old truck that sits next to our garden. And I see that it's already been decorated for fall: a little nesting material, some moss, rust, and a cobweb. I feel like I stumbled upon someone's little treasure box.

I know some of you, like Jen and Amy and Sandra, find wonderful treasures daily, which you show us in gorgeous photographs. Others comb thrift stores and estate sales for vintage items. I love looking at those things. And others come up with the most clever crafts or jewelry, or items of furniture you restore - or recipes you share with us.

So, what's your favorite treasure of late?

I'm still looking for that 1950s pair of young boy burgandy and black hockey skates - that I wish I'd not given away... probably 10 years ago. And we won't mention the teddy bear.

Pomegranate Orange Scones Recipe

Okay, before I get to the recipe, I have to admit that until last week, I'd never tasted a pomegranate in my life. When this deep, dark secret was revealed, my granddaughter and my next door neighbor lady, who just happened to deliver a few pomegranates, were horrified. Bethany proceeded to peel the pomegranate right then and there, and I was initiated into the wonderful world of arils.

 dvdbeaver.com

So I ate my first pomegranate arils. Eating pomegranate arils was a lot like eating really sweet and juicy fruit at the same time as chewing on dry field corn. But the juicy part disappears and you're left with a bit of mealy stuff in your mouth.

If you didn't grow up on a farm, you might not have eaten dry field corn. It's not something that our mother served us at the dinner table, of course, but a kid eats dry field corn for the same reason that they lick a block of salt that's been set out in the pasture for the cows or drink out of a mud puddle.

Pomegranate Orange (Chocolate) Scones, Recipe:
Makes seventeen 3.5 inch scones

The original recipe, which I tweaked a bit, was found at runningtothekitchen.com

4 c. all purpose flour
1 c. butter, cubed
2/3 c. sugar
2 t. salt
2 T. baking powder
1 t. baking soda

1 c. buttermilk
2 eggs
1/3 c. orange zest
6 oz. mini semi-sweet chocolate chips
2 c. pomegranate arils (in this case, it was all the arils from two pomegranates)

Preheat oven to 400 degrees F.  Spray heavy jelly roll pan with no-stick cooking spray.

Combine flours, butter, sugar, salt, baking powder, and baking soda in stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment. Mix on medium speed until finely mixed.

In a small bowl, whisk together all remaining ingredients except chocolate chips and pomegranate arils. Pour wet ingredients into stand mixer and mix together on medium speed until incorporated. Add 6 oz. mini semi-sweet chocolate chips and mix into the rest.

Fold in pomegranate arils.

Drop by large spoonfuls onto baking sheet. Bake at 400 degrees for 18-20 minutes until lightly golden brown on top and edges.

Best served warm with REAL Wisconsin butter!

And the mealy stuff doesn't hang around your mouth. It works well into the whole scheme of the scone.

***

So I just now took them out of the oven and have a buttered scone sitting here in front of me. I took a bite...........................  Here's my assessment:

Tender and Delicious!! Lots of pomegranate arils, plenty of orange zest, and mini semi-sweet chocolate chips are a terrific combination.

This would be a nice treat early on Christmas morning, to go along with your freshly-brewed coffee or tea!
