I'm telling a tale of Jazzie, because I was very impressed with her yesterday. Here's the story:  She was lying on the window seat, her favorite place to keep an eye on wildlife, including deer, bunnies, UPS, FED EX, USPS, the dumpster man, employees, and Mr. C. coming home. She started barking, just a couple sharp barks, but as I was trying to see what she was barking at, a big deer caught my eye. He was running south, across Neighbor Bill's Triangle and disappeared behind the spruce trees.

I was amazed when Jazzie suddenly jerked her head to the right, watching for the deer to come out from behind the barn, which it would do, if it continued its track. I knew she was smart, but didn't realize that she had that kind of logic capability. This morning, she showed me again:  She was out in the back yard, near the barn. I was standing out on the front porch, walked to the end to get the photo of the frosty fields (above in collage), and said, 'Hi Jazzie.' Well, she couldn't get to me directly, but she knew enough to go to the back door and pound on it (yes, she does) so that Mr. C. would let her in. She made a beeline to the front door, because she knew that's how I get onto the porch - from the front door. Smart little dog! ('Little' is relative, I realize.)

Anyway, you're all probably thinking, 'yeah, so my dog does that too.' I just didn't know she could THINK like that. Mr. C. then asked me if I thought that she ever thinks about her former life. I told him that I was pretty sure she didn't think about the previous five minutes. But oh well. She really did impress me. That's one smart little grandpuppy!  If she lived in northern England, she would probably have the fun and interesting job of herding sheep. Here, she only has bunnies to occasionally chase, catch, and devour. Poor dog. I'd love to have a flock of sheep (like maybe 8), but you-know-who isn't budging.

Just look at that photo of her in the collage. Don't you think she needs a flock of sheep??

So now I'm going to give you equal time to tell me what smart thing your dog did, because I know they're all remarkable animals. Feel free to brag.  I mean it. You'll notice that I did.  :-)

Does Woolly Bear Caterpillar Predict Milder or Harsher Winter?

"According to folk wisdom, when the brown bands on fall woolly bears are narrow, it means a harsh winter is coming. The wider the brown band, the milder the winter will be. Some towns hold annual woolly worm festivals in the fall, complete with caterpillar races and an official declaration of the woolly worm's prediction for that winter. 
 
"Are the woolly worm's bands really an accurate way to predict the winter weather? Dr. C.H. Curran, former curator of insects at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City, tested the woolly worms' accuracy in the 1950's. His surveys found an 80% accuracy rate for the woolly worms' weather predictions.

"Other researchers have not been able to replicate the success rate of Curran's caterpillars, though. Today, entomologists agree that woolly worms are not accurate predictors of winter weather."

I'm putting my money on the Woolly Bear Caterpillar rather than the weatherman, although I don't have last year's caterpillar to compare the two. We need a mild winter after last year's horrid winter and the year before where we had 18 inches of snow the beginning of May.

Am I the only one who calls them Wooly Bears? I see that this article calls them a Woolly Worm. I know they're a worm, but they're way cuter than your typical nightcrawler.

P.S.  After I had written the above, Mr. Cranberry saw TWO woolly bear caterpillars crossing the road. They were all black. That is not a good sign for those of us in the Northwoods.

There is something so charming about an Aga!  Secretly, I imagined living in a Yorkshire cottage with my dogs, my cat(s), a tile floor, and an Aga. And Kevin.

I want that kitchen (above) - complete with chubby yellow Lab and minus the lazy guy reading the paper while the carrots wilt. Okay, I'm not exactly coveting it, but it does make me think about painting my kitchen cupboards white. You-know-who is not fond of the idea. He says it's a fad. Maybe, but...

I LOVE this Aga and the photo. I first saw the photo in a book I bought from Goodwill, 'Perfect English Cottage.' If you've not seen that book, it's worth checking out on Amazon. If I never get to England again, I will look at my photos and will page through Perfect English Cottage from time to time.

The only thing I don't like about the photo above? If you zoom in, you'll see that the tablecloth has pompoms along its edge. Eek.  But I do love the white beams.

That photo makes me want to go paint something. I wonder if it will inspire Suzan of Simply Vintageous? You've got to visit her blog if you're not already a follower. The conversations between Suzan and John are hilarious. Anyway, I digress. Back to the subject of Agas.

I did a Google search for info on Agas and came across this article from the UK Telegraph. The following is an excerpt:

Imagine - a raspberry-colored Aga!! Isn't it beautiful. And for only £5,000+ pounds, it can be yours!

Nice sink, huh! It's deep enough to bath a toddler in, although I don't have any small children around here. Still, I like it. Actually, I have a great old white enamel cast iron sink with built in drain board, standing up along the wall of the garage, just in case I ever need another sink - which I'm sure I do, even as I write. It is a great old sink, and there's been a small ongoing debate for years now - about its usefulness and whether or not it will one day be hooked up to water lines again.

Very pretty, but I think this was a show kitchen. Who really lives like that - (besides my sister and my daughter?)  lol    I mean, c'mon. Flat surfaces are there for a reason.  Just look at my desk, for example! (maybe not) But it is a nice black Aga.
