Best Hamburgers in America - and Vintage Treasures

In the Driftless area of SW Wisconsin, in the heart of the Kickapoo River Valley, is the little Norwegian village of Westby. In the little village of Westby is a little cafe. And in the little cafe is a chef who makes the BEST hamburgers in America. You can argue with me, but I have a First Amendment Right to say that, and besides, I suspect it's true. Just as I stated that The Cricketers Pub in Canterbury has the best fish & chips in England. Prove me wrong. I accept airfare.

ANYway, Borgen's is an institution. It's been there as long as I can remember, although sadly, it did close for a while. But now it has opened under new management and offers the most amazing hamburgers. They're delicious, tender, crispy on the outside (I'm a huge fan of crispy, and if I keep eating those hamburgers each time I'm down there, I'll probably be a huge fan, full stop!)  I think they make the hamburger buns in house, they always serve it with lettuce, tomato, and a dill pickle. I recommend it highly. Worth the trip to Wisconsin. I would tell you about their other food too, but the hamburger is so good that I order it every single time. I do order the 3 oz. Senior Burger and  I do give most of my crispy French fries to Mr. C., so that helps, I think. Doesn't it?

In the photo above is a stack of antique Bibles, two in Norwegian and one in Danish. All were found by Mr. C. on job sites where buildings were being demolished. It's also why we have about 36 slate blackboards. I can't bear to see actual slate blackboards destroyed.

The encyclopedias are from the late 1800's, and I shouldn't tell you that when I was a kid, (and yes, they were already old then!) I cut a picture of Abraham Lincoln out of one of them for a school report. I don't think I've ever cut another picture from a book again - ever. In fact, I have only recently been able to bring myself to throw away any hardcover books. Some go to my children, some books go to Goodwill, and some books are worthy only of the dumpster (a tiny category).

The little black onyx (or maybe just black glass, but I've always thought he was onyx) dog once belonged to my older brother, but he didn't care about it, or at least didn't notice that it went missing back when I was about 12. Poor little Scottie has a broken foot and one broken ear that he suffered when he fell onto the cast iron Home Comfort cookstove in our kitchen.

Lastly, is an antique telephone. It doesn't have settings or apps or a gallery. I think that use of the phone pictured, other than as an intercom between the barn and house on the farm when I was growing up, predates even my youth, buried in the sands of time though that may be. But until I was seven years old, we did have a wall phone that you had to crank like that, so... Anyway, our ring was 3 longs and 1 short, I think. It was on a party line, which meant everyone on the line (all the neighbors) heard everyone else's phone ringing, and everyone always knew everyone else's business - a lot like Facebook, actually.

Breakfast in Bed

Good grief, how can it be June already! I know that summer isn't technically here, but summertime is so fleeting and up here in the Northwoods, we know we've usually got 5 good months, so we'd better make the most of them.

As usual, I like to share glimpses of our farm and our neighborhood.

From top, left, going clockwise:

Phlox, which are growing wild in the ditches this time of year, at least the ones the township hasn't yet mowed. They're so delicate and pretty. The township is pretty aggressive about mowing every possible plant that could interfere with the snowplow, come next winter. Up here, we have to have wide ditches so that there's someplace to push all that snow.

Yes, like that.
A not-distant-enough memory

Heifers from a small, grazing herd that I passed on the way to Sand Creek the other day.

Chopper boxes, waiting to be useful. I noticed last night that there is now only one. No surprise, for the alfalfa is growing like crazy in this weather.

Breakfast in bed.  Misty, my little dog (I call her little because she's the smaller of the two dogs), can no longer hear or see, and her sense of smell is diminished. Sometimes I have to take breakfast to her. On the other hand, if I open a can of chicken, she manages to get to the kitchen and underfoot in no time at all. Hmmm.  And speaking of breakfast in bed, I don't know how anyone can tolerate it.

 Breakfast in Bed

The Blue Pallet: For some odd reason, that looks like a work of art to me. I love the weathered wood and the pretty hyacinth blue. I have no idea where it came from, but now it's on the stack of pallets near the wood pile. I think I should use it for something. I'm waiting for inspiration.

Flowers: Pink petunias and heliotrope. They're so pretty together. We had a threat of frost Saturday night, so they're going to be planted today. I'm glad I didn't plant the tomatoes and peppers yet. Typical of Wisconsin, we need to wait until June if we don't want to cover our plants with blankets to protect them from frost.

Chopper boxes on a rainy afternoon

Sweet little grandson and his daddy popped in for a visit.

Saturday evening, threat of frost.
Time to drag out all those sheets and blankets for the garden.
Covering the green beans and the strawberries
Leaving the peas to fend for themselves, uncovered.

Update: It did not freeze Saturday night after all. It was 38 degrees at 4:30 AM Sunday morning. I always have mixed feelings when that happens. So glad that it didn't freeze, and yet a little annoyed at the same time. LOL

Hope you have a great Monday, friends!

Waiting...

Being her best patient self

When it's warm out (like two days ago, not today), I like to eat lunch on the front porch. Jazzie loves to go out with me, hoping that I'll drop another tidbit of chicken onto the floor for her. I do. She's rewarded for her patience. Good dog!

Hope you have a nice, warm Saturday!

Having secured a house sitter/dog sitter for the weekend, this evening we'll be off to visit the grandkids who just moved to Wisconsin from Indiana.  Can't wait.

See y'all next week!

Winter Wonderland Arrived December 3-4

Cranberry Bush Outside Our Office Window

Fence surrounding the base of the cranberry bush
Keeping bunnies away, hopefully

The weather has spent yesterday and today turning our neighborhood into a winter wonderland. It's beautiful! And that may be the only nice thing I say about Wisconsin's winter. And technically, it's still autumn.

 Backyard December 4, 2013
Frosty Fences

I seem mostly motivated to hibernate, set up the Christmas tree, and listen to Christmas music. John Rutter - Christmas Day in the Morning, Christmas With the Academy of St. Martin-in-the-Field, and Jessye Norman's Christmastide are currently on the CD disc changer. Three of my favorites. I have a lot of Christmas favorites.

I was going to clone out what's left of our little McIntosh apple tree, but decided to leave it in the photo. The deer enjoyed it. They left only a few 6" stubs of branches above the top of the 'protective' corrugated pipe. And still I was rooting for them to make it unscathed through hunting season?!

Strawberries and a Dog and a Cat

Strawberries finally arriving
Second week of July

I really need to read the UW Extension brochure on raising strawberries. This is the second year for these plants, and they're in two nice, pretty-much weed-free rows because I have strips of carpet on either side of the rows. We had a satisfying crop of berries until it got really hot, several days (it seemed) in the mid nineties. Then the berries seemed to stop. There are a few, but they're marble sized. Once they're completely done bearing, I need to figure out what to do for next year, whether it's transplanting the smaller berries and tilling down the row of older berries or what. I love having strawberries and I hate weeds. Hate may not be a strong enough word.

Just a handful,
but a couple days later, about 5 quarts
They're not huge and beautiful like the ones in the store, but the taste is amazing!

Some small, some big, but all sweet and delicious!

I checked with those who frequent Hometalk and one of the responses to my question about getting bigger berries informed me that my strawberries might be too close together (which they are!), and that they need to be fertilized twice a season (which they've not been). So, I think I have some good information to take into next year's crop.

Blind and deaf little Misty

The update on Misty is that since the photo above was taken, she is completely blind and almost totally deaf, never leaves the kitchen except when I take her out on lead to the great, scary outdoors. Right now she is lying on the cool kitchen vinyl floor. I try to spend several petting segments with her each day, for that seems to be the only time she interacts. She still usually raises her head and sniffs the air when someone comes into the house, so we know her olfactory receptors are working.

Until a couple years ago, Misty spent summer afternoons running and leaping through the alfalfa field, chasing butterflies. She loved it! Now her world has become much smaller and she confines herself to the kitchen, except when I take her outdoors. Even then, she wants to get her business done and get back to the safety of the house. Misty is a sweet little girl, but something tells me that this (probably) 13-15 year old dog isn't going to make it another winter. Maybe she'll surprise us. I hope so.
