Notice how it's snowing sideways! It was a very windy day and we were on the top of the Minster, looking down at the town. It was the first time I can remember that I didn't complain about freezing to death. Oh wait. Maybe I did, but just a little.

I've decided that although most of my England photos have already been used in my blog posts, I have some newer readers who may not have seen them. And of course, going through my photos again brings back wonderful memories of the great times we had visiting England. So yes, this is probably an entirely selfish motive. But anyway, Fridays, at least for a while, will be designated as 'Anglophile Friday - Favorite Photos of England' here on Cranberry Morning. One by one, my favorite England photos will be shown here. I  hope I won't be the only one enjoying them. Thanks for indulging me. :-)

The photo above was taken in 2004. I wonder if milk is still delivered to the door in Askrigg. I hope so.

Well...

Since I started this blog post, I have found out that yes, indeed, milk is still delivered to the door.

From the website of Stony End Luxury Bed and Breakfast Accommodation, this line:

'Our milk comes from Allen Kirkbride in Askrigg, he milks his own cows and delivers our milk daily.'

I thought Marmite sounded like a type of plastic, but happy to find out that it is some sort of yeast food item that one evidently spreads on toast. Toast 'soldiers,' that is, aka toast sticks.  So then I had to browse the internet to show you  a photo of toast soldiers.  Here's one from ifood.tv -

I can tell you right now, before I've even tasted Marmite, that I prefer my toast soldiers with Marmite, rather than runny egg yolk. Check this out, the Marmite website. It'll give you a better idea of how people in the UK feel about Marmite. Who knew!

And now (looking back at that menu) I can see that this is going to lead me to another post about the Wensleydale Creamery. It's a fabulous place with amazing cheeses. But then, how could you not like something that has the Wallace and Gromit seal of approval?  

But that's for another time.

Milk Bottle Nostalgia

Rainy Day in Askrigg

Just to let you know that I haven't dropped off the edge of the Earth, I decided to post this single photo, one of my favorites from Askrigg in the Yorkshire Dales. (How I love that area!) This post was inspired by Heide and her milk bottle collection. Please visit her at her blog, Apron History.  Don't you love her header!

It's a rainy day here in NW Wisconsin. I do see a few daffodils that are open, so that's encouraging. We may have springtime here after all.

Askrigg, North Yorkshire, Part II

In our last travelogue, we were in the North Yorkshire village of Askrigg, which was often used in the filming of 'All Creatures Great and Small,' the TV series beloved by so many, including our family. As I said in the post 'Askrigg, North Yorkshire, Part I' we drove from Askrigg up the hills to the Askrigg Common (circled in red, above), then down to Low Row and Grinton, and eventually on into Richmond.

My favorite sheep, found on the Askrigg Common, an unfenced area where sheep graze freely. And true to the James Herriot stories, they simply wander about, crossing the road at will. I was totally taken in by these gorgeous Yorkshire/Scottish Blackface sheep and wished I could take a few home. Unfortunately, I only had one carry-on.

 

This is bleak countryside, especially in March. Look at those narrow, winding roads, a common theme we found throughout England, once we got off the A roads. It was definitely worth renting a car and following our Ordnance Survey or Official Tourist Maps.

Another of my favorites. I can completely empathize with this sheep.

Kevin kept saying, 'I think we have enough pictures of sheep.'

I don't know what he was thinking.

How can anyone have too many pictures of sheep, especially these sheep!

Heading downhill toward Low Row

There is a reason people drive small vehicles in England.

There is nothing quite so beautiful as the North Yorkshire Dales.  It is everything I wanted England to be.

Last, but certainly not least, a real true ear worm for you. I first heard this song on All Creatures Great and Small, and I think Tristan and James were singing it in the first episode of series one. (Not sure about that.) Once when we were staying at a B&B in Jackfield, a man from the area began visiting with us over breakfast, and we got to talking about this beloved song. I think he was surprised that we actually knew of it! :-) And for the past couple days, it's been constantly running through my brain!
