Christmas Special, All Creatures Great & Small - Anglophile Friday

James Herriot and Helen
played by
Christopher Timothy and Helen Drinkwater

Photo via DailyMail.co.uk

When All Creatures Great & Small was on PBS in the 1980s, I looked forward to Sunday evenings when I'd make a cup of cocoa and get it ready just in time to sit down and hear that cheerful opening tune of 'All Creatures.' That, of course, is where my love of Yorkshire began.

The TV series was based on the books by 'James Herriot' (Alf Wight), who began his veterinary practice in c. 1940 in the Yorkshire Dales and Moors, working out of 23 Kirkgate in the town of Thirsk.

From YouTube, my very favorite episode of All Creatures Great & Small
(or at least one of my favorite. I loved so many of them!)
It's one of the Christmas specials, the one with
the REAL Helen.

From left to right: Robert Hardy (Sigfried) has a long, long list of movies to his credit, including Sherlock Holmes, Foyle's War, and Inspector Morse. Christopher Timothy dropped off my radar until I saw him in an old mystery movie.  Margaretta Scott (Mrs. Pomfrey) turned up in a Dorothy L. Sayers' movie as Lord Peter's mother, and Peter Davison (Tristan) was Dr. Who and Campion, among his many credits (and some discredits, I think, like Distant Shores.)

I don't know how anyone can grow up in Yorkshire and ever move away.

So this evening, go make yourself a cup of cocoa and enjoy the above YouTube video, which will take you to that wonderful world of All Creatures Great & Small set in the 1940s Yorkshire. You won't be sorry.

This post was written earlier in the week and scheduled to publish. I will be away from the computer today to spend time with my daughter who is visiting from Texas. Have a wonderful weekend and thanks for stopping in!

See you next week.

Along the B6160 South of Kettlewell - Yorkshire Dales - Anglophile Friday

Keeping the sheep in  - or out

And if they'd thought of a fourth type of fence, they probably would have used that too!

 The Yellow Line

You can ignore the red and blue lines. The post today contains photos taken along the yellow line portion of the trip from Leyburn to Embsay along the B6160. I thought this was an interesting little piece of pastureland in the Yorkshire Dales, south of Kettlewell.

Grassington (see map above)

If you ever have the opportunity to get to Yorkshire, it's definitely worth renting a car and traveling down the B6160 from Leyburn to Skipton (just south of Embsay). It's definitely a road less traveled and it did make all the difference!

Public Right of Way - Anglophile Friday

Public rights of way from gov.uk

"Public rights of way are open to everyone. They can be roads, paths or tracks, and can run through towns, countryside or private property.

"You have the right to walk along them. Some rights of way are also open to horse riders, cyclists or motorists:
  • footpaths - let you go by foot only
  • bridleways - let you go by foot, horse or bike
  • restricted byways - let you travel by any form of transport that doesn’t have a motor
  • byways open to all traffic - let you travel by any form of transport, including cars (though they’re mainly used by walkers and horse riders)"

Lovely Reeth - in the Yorkshire Dales. Even the pigs take little notice of the tourists who decide to walk from the lower level of the town (above) along the public footpath to the upper level. Look what a beautiful environment those pigs are in, yet they seem oblivious to those incredible drystone walls and the grand hills surrounding the village. Snort. Oink. Zzzzz.

Turning the corner of the [fenced in] footpath
and heading toward the incline

Looking back, from halfway up the hill (still on the footpath)

Problems in using a right of way (from gov.uk)

"The people who own or maintain the land must keep public rights of way open and useable.

If you have a problem using a right of way - eg an obstruction, poor maintenance or a misleading sign – you should report it to:

Aha! an obstruction! But I think we can forgive this one and not report it to the authorities.

He went 'thataway!'

Public footpaths are great for the walking enthusiast, but not always easy to follow.

What?! This is a public footpath sign?

Some public footpath signs are hardly distinguishable from any other old post, especially if you don't know exactly what you're supposed to be looking for, or if they're obscured by flowering shrubs. When my daughter and I were in Bourton-on-the-Water, we decided to take the public footpath toward Little Rissington and lost track of the sign posts, eventually ending up in a pasture with a friendly? bull. That was our first real clue that we must be off the posted track. Fortunately, neither the bull nor we were irreparably offended.

Wensleydale Creamery at Hawes - Anglophile Friday

The words, 'rennet' and 'bacteria' and 'sour' and 'fungus' and 'coagulate' don't sound very appetizing, do they. Isn't it amazing that they are part of producing an exceptionally delicious product!

It's been a while since we spent time in Hawes in the Yorkshire Dales. What an interesting and fun way to spend a day!

Wensleydale Creamery employees hard at work...

...for the final delicious product!
Free samples, yea!

I'm posting these photos although it was a dreary day in Hawes when I took them. I'd love to someday take this trip again with my new camera, because it seems to be more able to bring in the necessary light, even on a darkish day. Someplace I read that you should not post sub-standard photos on your blog. Then again, if I didn't post these sub-standard photos, I wouldn't be posting any photos at all. So, because I'd like to give you an idea of what the little village of Hawes (where the Wensleydale Creamery is located) looks like, I'm including a few photos I took.

Look at that beautiful brick street. This is definitely a place to wear comfortable shoes.

Is this what they mean by 'a one horse town' ??
Barn and pen right on main street, or at least what seemed like the main street.

The rushing stream in March
People seem to maneuver their cars into every possible nook and cranny.

Evidently we beat the hoard of bikers to the cheese samples.

And I don't think they were headed to the Tea Room.
I'd love to rent a room at the back of that tea room.
Look at the view I'd have of the hills behind.

Herriot's B&B in Hawes

If you have plans to visit Hawes any time soon, be sure to book rooms at Herriot's B&B. Check it out.  And don't forget to stop in at the Wensleydale Creamery to sample those delicious cheeses - and to buy a Wallace and Gromit poster, of course!

Fountains Abbey Undercroft - Yorkshire Dales

Fountains Abbey Undercroft
Yorkshire Dales

'For the word of the cross is to those who are perishing foolishness, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. For it is written, "I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and the cleverness of the clever I will set aside." (Isaiah 29:14).

Where is the wise man? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? For since in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom did not come to know God, God was well-pleased through the foolishness of the message preached to save those who believe.

For indeed Jews ask for signs, and Greeks search for wisdom;  but we preach Christ crucified, to Jews a stumbling block and to Gentiles foolishness, but to those who are the called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God.

Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men.'    - I Corinthians 1:18-25

Have a blessed Lord's Day,

Anglophile Friday - Snow in Yorkshire

York Minster in a real snowstorm

 More real snow

Notice how it's snowing sideways! It was a very windy day and we were on the top of the Minster, looking down at the town. It was the first time I can remember that I didn't complain about freezing to death. Oh wait. Maybe I did, but just a little.

More real snow - York

Yes, what you see above is a shameless attempt to PicMonkey (did you know it's now a verb??) snowflakes and frost onto the photo of my favorite sweet sheep so they could be included.

Lambs in North Yorkshire

From a few of my friends, residents of North Yorkshire...

Forget the Olympics! Why would anyone go to England at any time other than lambing season? How fun to see all these sweet little faces in March, even though 'the skies are...cloudy all day.'  And obviously, these cute and wooly lambs are joyously oblivious to the recipe for Irish Stew.

Have a great St. Patrick's Day weekend, everyone!
